Well that answer is simple. I do work part-time at a REAL JOB teach art after school. Working part-time helps me with my dream of wanting to be a stay-at-home mom as my husband and I are trying to start a family ourselves, and that would be physically impossible if I took a full-time job working for someone else besides myself. Being self-employed gives me the freedom to work when I want, while at the same time allowing me to explore other creative areas I earn a living at---web design, tutoring, teaching private art lessons and painting. There is also a possibility that I may become employed full-time running my own in-home day care in the next 6-12 months. Read more about the future of my in-home day care. Working with children allows me to use the skills & disciplines that I have been studying for the last ten years, in the most practical setting possible--taking care of children. I feel fortunate enough that I had the opportunity to afford an education, work at various educational and child care facilities, and obtain a level of professionalism, compassion and understanding for the children I have taught, the staff that I worked with and the parents that trusted me with their children's lives. After I graduated I worked for Monart as an art teacher for 5 years. I now work for myself, which gives me the creative freedom to teach the children art in a way that inspires me and the children. Eventually, it will allow me to enjoy all the developmental wonders of raising my own children. Right now, my main focus is to keep myself surrounded with unconditional love from family and friends and that is why I feels so uplifted when I am working with children creating and teaching because it is my choice. The method that I use to teach was acquired from almost 10 years of working with children of all abilities and disabilities at dozens of schools in the Encinitas, and San Diego Unified District. I merged my own teaching philosophies with the directed drawing methods of Mona Brookes to open the door of creativity in each child. Monart's method was a bit too restricting and the "copy me" approach can inhibit the child's ability to create from their own imagination. From my years of teaching children drawing and painting, my own method emerged, and I found it to be very successful both artistically and academically. |
